June 2013- Harper Announces the Addition of New Speakers to Carbon Fiber R&D Workshop

Harper has secured several new speakers to add to the agenda for the 2013 Carbon Fiber R&D Workshop to be held July 25-26th in Buffalo, NY. Industry experts from Ford Europe, University of Washington, Clemson University, University of British Columbia, and India Institute of Technology have been added to the program to present their latest findings and perspectives in the area of carbon fiber research and development.

On display during the event will be Harper’s complete Carbon Fiber Microline™ research system, the world’s most flexible and highly tailored system, designed to support the unique needs of research and development efforts. Attendees will be given a tour by several of Harper’s PhD experts.

April 2013- Harper Develops Unique Rotary System for Demilitarization of Ammunition

Harper International has been selected by U.S. Demil, LLC (USD) for the design of a new continuous indirect Rotary Thermal Treatment Unit (TTU) for demilitarization processing of munitions. The equipment will support US Department of Defense efforts directed at reducing and recycling large stockpiles of excess, obsolete and unserviceable munitions for safety and environmental purposes.

USD conducted several extensive process development sessions at Harper’s Technology Research Center to test and prove their proprietary non-incinerative thermal demilitarization process, known as “Decineration” ™, on various small production lots of unique munition materials. The resulting TTU achieves the client’s needs of successfully demilitarizing and recovering, without destruction, all non-energetic materials in an environmentally responsible manner, at levels not previously achieved in other existing demilitarization processes. As such, USD’s closed end “Decineration” methodology is considered a unique material recovery process that has received a US Patent and a federal EPA exemption from RECRA-C permitting requirements.

March 2013- Harper Celebrates with ORNL for Opening of CFTF

Harper officials today helped United States Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) celebrate the ribbon cutting of their Carbon Fiber Technology Center, along with government officials and industry partners.

Harper was chosen for engineering, process equipment, installation and startup of the complete process line at the center of the facility, which is focused on supporting ORNL’s Low Cost Carbon Fiber research and technology transfer. The facility, to be a collaborative research center, is designed as one of the most sophisticated and capable facilities in the industry and will support operation under multiple precursor platforms.

The custom-designed line incorporates Harper’s proprietary multi-flow oxidation oven technology, advanced LT and HT slot furnaces rated for 1000°C and 2000°C respectively, pre and post-treatment fiber conditioning, gas treatment and handling, and material transport systems.Funding for the equipment was appropriated through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act via DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Vehicle Technologies Program.

February 2013- U.S. Senator Gillibrand visits Harper to Announce Manufacturing Act

Harper International was pleased to have Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) announce her launch of the “Made in America Manufacturing Act” at their facilities on February 11, 2013. Gillibrand introduced this legislation that is intended to boost advanced manufacturing in New York State, along with Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz, and Buffalo Niagara Partnership Vice President Craig W. Turner.

This act will impact high-tech and clean-tech manufacturing, such as Harper International, as well as other industries, with the creation of a federal funding competition that encourages states and regional public-private partnerships to design and implement comprehensive strategies that spur growth for local manufacturing industries and that train workers with the skills that businesses need.

September 2012- Harper Contracts with Orbite for High Purity Processing Systems

Orbite Aluminae Inc. has chosen Harper for for two high temperature systems in series for conversion of aluminum chloride hexahydrate crystals to high purity alumina (HPA). Orbite conducted on-site testing at Harper’s Technology Research Center in exploration of the best furnace design to support the 99.99%+ purity goal of their game-changing technology, and chose a Rotary Tube and Vertical furnace in series to support their high profile production expansion.
